New Events on Calendar
Jul 14th, 2010 by Justin Buist

Justin here.

I’ve taken the liberty of adding a few events to our calendar for those that might be interested.

Pistol Shoots:
Over at Chick-Owa in Zeeland they’re running a couple different pistol events every other Wednesday. Unfortunately that overlaps with the weekly gathering at WWSC.

There’s still one Bowling Pin shoot out there on August 4. You can also run a pistol caliber carbine in these events if that tickles your fancy. Entry fees are $5 per event for non members.

Action Pistol shoots are also on the calendar and they’re going to be held on July 21 and August 18. I attended the first of these events and the organizer is clearly setting these up to be practical training exercises for people that carry a concealed pistol. All you need is a pistol, two magazines, a holster, and a box of ammo. I’d highly recommend attending at least one if you’re a concealed carrier. They’re wonderful exercises in pointing out areas that you need to work on. Entry fee is $12 for non members.

WWSC vs CSC Keg Shoot
If you’re a WWSC member you probably saw this in this month’s newsletter. August 18 (which overlaps with the Action Pistol shoot at Chick-Owa) the shooting will take place at Caledonia’s Sporsman’s Club and August 25 the shooting will take place at WWSC. Entry fee is $12 which gets you two lines (trap or skeet), dinner and beverages. Remember: The winner of this event if whatever club breaks the most birds. So, the more people you can get out to shoot for WWSC the better chance we have at winning!

Shotgun Steel Plate Shoots
Weather permitting these will be held on the 2nd Saturday in the months of August, September, and October on the WWSC Charter Range starting at 10am. If you’re the type of person that keeps a shotgun handy in the event that something goes bump in the night you really should give this one a try. It’s incredibly fun and gives you a chance to see if there’s anything you might need to practice a bit more, like being able to top off your shotgun under pressure. For safety reasons only #8 and #9 shot are permitted. Entry fees are $5 per event. See this month’s WWSC newsletter for more details on how the two events run or contact me if you’re curious.

“Off A Lot” @ Seaway
Jul 14th, 2010 by CaptainJack

Some of  the “Off A Lot” crew made their way to Seaway this past Saturday. Stacie, Don, Darris, Char, Ted, Nick and myself  made a day of shooting Sporting Clays and 5-stand as well as Wobble Trap and Regular Trap.

Darris (our newest member) was king on the Clays course, with Ted nipping at his heels. Both shot extremely well. This was Darris’ maiden voyage into Sporting Clays and like all other clay games, he was superb. Well done both of you.

Now what really was cool to watch was Char shooting 5-stand. Let me tell you, Annie Oakley has nothing on her. Char is the queen of 5-stand. Her scores were extraordinary and watching her left me in total awe. Another high 5 is in order.

A special thanks to Mike for the great hospitality Seaway showed us. Shotgun Sports is a brotherhood with Mike leading the way.

We have a Calendar
Jun 5th, 2010 by Justin Buist

With spring here and summer coming up I figured I should get a calendar of some type going to keep us all apprised on shooting events that Off A Lot members will be attending outside the regular shotgun games at West Walker.

So, we have a Calendar now. You’ll see a new link to it on the top left under “Links.”

And, since it’s powered by the pigeons of Google you can easily integrate it into your own personal calendaring software. Just shoot me an email if you want help with that.

SquarePants Checks In

Ahhhh-finally smelled gunpowder again!

We (Elliot, Tom & I) went out shooting today, after several months of one thing or another stopping us. Tom is a skeet shooter (just about every week he shoots 4 lines) so he was showing us rookies how to do it. Tom doesn’t like trap at all, but he is an awesome skeet shooter, like 23 of 25 is a terrible round, so he was doing more teaching than anything our first box. We ended up shooting a total of 100 shells. We didn’t keep score but I think I averaged 5 or 6 each line. Some of them birds come out of the house soooo fast. Also, trying to pump my 870 on the doubles – holy crap! I think I just might have to go get me a over/under – oh darn!
Then I convinced them to run a line of trap with me. Again, I shot terrible. I mean I really embarrassed the off -a-lot name. It has been way too long since I shot – I hope to get out at least twice a month with the guys. Tom said he tried trap about 20 years ago and didn’t like it. However, he said he would be more than happy to pull for me whenever I went out with him.
Tom mentioned that I should switch the choke in my 870 to a regular ”skeet” choke. Would you recommend that? He said that my mechanics are pretty good, so with the other choke my scores should get better.
Even though I sucked, it felt so nice to get out there and make it rain orange.

Char Shot a 25 in Wobble
Jan 24th, 2010 by CaptainJack

Great shooting was on display this past Saturday at the club. Most everyone was shooting OK, dealing with a pretty stiff wind coming out of the east.  The birds after leaving the trap house, were going straight into the wind, causing them to climb hard and taking forever to crest. On the Wobble field, The high birds were going almost straight up. Needless to say, kind of a tough shot.

Hats off to  Char, she shot spectacular despite the wind and put up her first straight Wobble 25. Congratulations are in order. The club house shot her hat afterwards, with the coup de grace being applied by Jim C. with his 4.10 pump. The poor hat looked pretty sorry afterwards.

Congrats Justin and Theresa

Justin is a Dad!!!!! Congratulations Theresa and Justin! After 57 hours of labor (no that is not a typo), Theresa gave birth January 8, to a little baby girl.  Little Baby Eleanor, was 20 inches long and weighed in at 7lbs 13oz. Mother and daughter are doing fine as well as Dad. I’m looking forward to seeing Eleanor’s baby pictures. Well done Justin and Theresa…well done.

Trap Doubles
Jan 1st, 2010 by CaptainJack

Last Wednesday, December 30, the “Off A Lot” gang was introduced to Trap Doubles. The night was a huge success., with Ken and Doug showing the way, for the rest of us beginners. Well done to both, they shot very well for the first time out.

Dan B. and Joe Jr. provided the setup and instruction before we went to the line. These guys are what shotgun sports are about. Their demeanor, talent and professionalism really shines a positive light on our sport. Thanks Dan and Joe.

The “Off A Lot” 2009/10 trap league is winding down. Last update (Dec. 27) had Danny’s team out in front of Uncle Joe’s team by 18 birds. It is going to come down to the wire. A very exciting finish is in store.

Yours in shooting

Jack

2009/2010 Awards Banquet
Dec 24th, 2009 by CaptainJack

I hope everyone is having a great Christmas and New Years. You are all very special people and make me so proud to be a part of all this. On behalf of Stacie and myself, thank you.

We have a surprise. Wednesday night, February 10, the night of our banquet, we will have a surprise guest speaker. This gentleman is what shooting sports is all about. He is the best ambassador I have ever met for our sport and one of the best people you will ever meet in your life. He agreed to speak to us on his way to another function. You are not going to want to miss this.

I had to move the time up 1/2 an hour to 5:30 pm. This is to give our speaker time to make his other commitment. So please note the date and time February 10, 2010. At 5:30 pm.

Remember, you can bring your immediate families or girlfriend, boyfriend, or the kids. We will have a couple of games to play for the kids.

Besides the awards being given out, we will introduce all the new members and talk about the upcoming year. I’m really excited about the future. We have a few irons in the fire and Danny will talk about one of them the night of the banquet.

Also, this is a potluck, so bring a dish to pass.

God Bless you all

Jack

Unexpected Benefit during Deer Week
Nov 20th, 2009 by CaptainJack

Last Wednesday, W.W.S.C. was supposed to be closed. In an unexpected turn of events, one of the Charter Members, made us an offer that we couldn’t refuse. Art took time out of his schedule and opened the club for us. This was a great gesture on his part and provided the team with an opportunity to work on some things.

The team took full advantage of the opportunity, with trap field #1 set up to repeat the same throw over and over, this provided some great practice for those that were having trouble with a particular shot. Dan and Uncle Joe used this as a coaching session for each shooter that wanted it.

Trap field #2 was set up as a regular field and a lot of the team was able to post some scores. We had a little mist in the air and at times the wind kicked up pretty good. But all in all, the scores were decent. Everyone was concentrating hard and having a tremendous time doing it.

After the last line was shot, we gathered up the equipment and spent some quality time in the club house shootin the breeze. The night was memorable. Thanks to everyone who made it out and helped make it happen. You guys are the best!

Congrats Is In Order
Oct 30th, 2009 by CaptainJack

Ted and Steph made it official Wednesday night. In case you weren’t at the club, Ted put the “big ring” on Steph’s finger and she put one through his nose (just kiddin). They said they are setting a date early next year. So please remember to congratulate them both. They are a match made in heaven.
